New legislation introduced yesterday by US Senators Grassley (R-IA) and Kohl (D-WI) will require manufacturers of medical devices to disclose the amount of money they give to physicians through payments, gifts, travel, etc.
ITS ABOUT TIME! How often has a sales rep come up to you insisting you inspect and certify their device safe for paitent use because some doctor you havent heard of wants it? We all know that physicians have been going on so called “ducation seminars” or “conventions” paid by manufacturers because they had help get their facilities to buy equipment.
Personally it must happen at least a couple of times a month. There is some sales rep running into Biomed with some machine, insisting that we must PM, and pass it. All because some doctor decided he needed another vacation. I wouldnt be surprised if most the time the doctor didnt even know what exactly the device did.
I guess we are about to see which manufacturers are paying which physicians, and which equipment purchases never should have happend.
