Conference summary
On November 21, 2008, the federal government issued a final rule for implementing the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005, including establishing a protected legal environment within which healthcare providers voluntarily report patient safety data—such as errors, near misses, and quality-related data—to Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs). The patient safety data submitted by providers to PSOs and, in turn, the analyses provided by PSOs to providers are subject to federal statutory legal privilege and confidentiality. The rule takes effect January 19, 2009.
